Laser hair removal is one of the most sought after procedures in the beauty industry – Why? Permanent hair loss claims, package deals to make the treatment more affordable, and the fact that it is offered at numerous spas/clinics make this the go-to treatment.
I had my very first laser hair removal session about 6 years at Absolutely Fabulous Urban Spa in Vancouver, BC as I was as a Spa Coordinator at the time – yay for job perks!
What is laser hair removal?
As many of you may already know, laser hair removal is a light therapy treatment that targets and destroys hair follicles, causing the hair to fall out. The laser that I used at the spa is called a diode laser – very effective. There are numerous laser options out there.
How expensive is the procedure?
Make sure to do your research & compare prices to ensure you’re not getting ripped off. There are so many offers thrown around to make it seem like you are getting an amazing deal when in reality you’re only being fooled by advertising. For effective results, about 6-8 treatments (sometimes even more) are required, so factor that into the cost. I’ve had laser hair removal done more than 10 times, but I was fortunate, as I did not have to pay full price. Pricing will vary based on area – package deals are worth the cost, as they will save you a bit of money, since you will require more than one treatment.
Is the procedure really 100% permanent?
This is where false advertising can come into play. There is nothing worse than being lied to and fooled. That’s why I am here to help clear that up. Everyone is different (ethnicity, skin, hair, etc), hence results vary per person. Some people see as much as a 95% decrease in hair growth after numerous sessions of laser hair removal, while others see about 60-70%. In terms of results, the more fair your skin is & the darker/thicker the hair, the better the results. This is from personal experience as well as conversations with my technician. In my case, I had the best results from treating underarms and bikini.
How is the pain?
In all honesty, it is not that bad because it is a quick procedure and there is no lingering pain. The best way to describe it is a snapping rubber band on the skin. In my experience, Brazilian (bikini) and underarms were the worst. Legs are very tolerable. I have also had the sides of my face done and that is also quite tolerable. Beauty is pain ladies and gents!
Is there downtime?
Depending on the area, you may have a bit of redness for a little while right after the treatment, but it will subside very quickly. You could literally have this treatment done during your lunch break!
At-home laser hair removal?
The beauty of this industry (no pun intended) is that it is evolving so quickly and you can now do this procedure at the comfort of your own home without needing to be a pro! Silk’n offers multiple at-home portable systems that work just as well as when you go to have it done professionally & at the fraction of the cost! You will need to buy replacement cartridges and learn how to properly use the device, but if you are up for it, why not?
Is it safe to have this procedure done while tanned?
Absolutely not! You risk serious skin burns and scars if you use a laser on tanned skin. I have actually experienced some burn around my underarm area because I decided to take the risk and it was not fun. Thankfully it healed, but I could have developed hyperpigmentation. It’s best to avoid sun exposure at least 2 weeks before/after having laser hair removal.
When is the best time of year to have this treatment?
As mentioned above, you shouldn’t really be doing this treatment if you have had sun exposure as it can cause the skin to burn. In my opinion, the best months to start would be September/October with each session 6-8 weeks apart. Why? By the time you are done with all your sessions, it will be summer time, yay! Also keep in mind that you should not wax the area(s) that will be treated for at least 1 month as the root of the hair needs to be present in order for the laser to effectively target/destroy it.
I hope I have covered most questions that many people have regarding laser hair removal and I will be back with a new post in a couple of week’s time! x
