I tried the Photorejuvenation Treatment

Disclosure – This post is sponsored by Lougheed Laser Centre as I received the treatment at no cost.  All thoughts & opinions are my own.

I have always struggled with mild rosacea and slight hyperpigmentation. I did my research and found that photorejuvenation is the best option for my skin concern. This treatment also boosts and stimulates fresh collagen production – As we age (after the age of around 25), we loose this production, so it’s very important to invest in skin treatments early to keep that youthful glow alive!

The clinic I visited has a unique way of offering photorejuvenation; their treatment is a combination of both photorejuvenation and vbeam. Photorejuvenation is also known as BBL (Broad Band Light) and is commonly used on the face, neck area, chest (décolleté), and hands.

How exactly does photorejuvenation work?

How this treatment works is it treats the problem areas of the skin with quick & powerful flashes of light to target pigment in the skin, redness/visible blood vessels, and acne causing bacteria (to name a few). This process in turn causes damage to the tissue via heat energy. Finally, the body’s natural healing process removes the damaged tissue and produces healthy collagen & elastin. vbeam is an added pulsed dye laser benefit which targets redness and compliments the BBL.

What is the cost of photorejuvenation?

Cost is usually the first question most people have in regards to skin treatments/cosmetic procedures. This treatment cost anywhere between $300 to $600 per treatment. Keep in mind that many technicians, including mine at Lougheed Laser, will recommend getting a series of 2-5 treatments to start, depending on the amount of hyperpigmentation/irregular texture you have. After this, individual treatments every few months will maintain your results! Lougheed Laser prices their Photorejuvenation treatments at $399/treatment.

Is it painful/alre there any side effects?

You are human, of course you will feel something. But to be completely honest, the pain is totally manageable and does not require anesthetic. During the treatment, the technician will apply a cooling gel that counterbalances the heat which is emitted with each pulse, making the experience more comfortable. The sensation is very similar to laser hair removal – a quick rubber band flick with warm heat in a zap-zap-zap motion.

Right after the treatment, my technician wiped away the gel and applied an spf moisturizer. My face was red for about 1-2 hours and was slightly swollen for the next 24 hours. I did my normal activities after the treatment, so there is no downtime with photo rejuvenation.

Who should try photorejuvenation & What are the benefits?

Photorejuvination is great for anyone that is into anti-aging, mainly looking for an improvement in the appearance of:

– Redness caused by rosacea (dilated blood vessels)

– Sun damage

– Red marks caused by breakouts

– Freckles

– Fine lines/wrinkles

Is there anything I should know before my treatment?

Yes! Make sure you do not have a tan because when tanned, melanin comes to the surface and this may confuse the device into falsely targeting the tanned area, instead of the actual target area you want to have treated. In addition, you can risk burning your skin.

Those with darker skin should have a consultation, though I suggest a consultation for everyone as the risks of developing permanent pigmentation changes/post-inflammatory pigmentation/skin burns are much higher. Why? Darker-toned skin has a more abundant amount of melanin. As a general rule, the lighter your skin-tone, the more safe it is to have photorejuvenation.

What should I do after my treatment?

I followed my normal skincare regime with the exception of exfoliants and retinol – a gentle creamy cleanser, vitamin c serum, calming & repairing serum and a tinted SPF 30.  The combination of these products would ensure that my skin: heals properly, aids in cell regeneration, and is protected from UVA (aging)/UVB (burning) rays.

*It is especially important to wear an SPF of 30+ every single day regardless of the weather. Since your skin is more sensitized after having photorejuvenation, SPF everyday is a huge must!

What were my results from photorejuvenation treatment?

As you can see from the before and after picture below, there is a noticeable difference in the skin, and this is only after 3 treatments. The rosacea on my cheeks has lessened and the small acne scar below my eye is also minimized. I had some visible blood vessels around my nose as well which were zapped away!

Overall, although I did not have too much hyperpigmentation, age spots, etc. and my rosacea is mild, I am happy with the results because I now have a more even skin tone, as well as smoother skin texture.
